Invite Other Countries Not Only China in PH Telco Industry
The news of China being invited to be a third player in the telecommunications industry of the Philippines, is a good news to everyone. Since it will break the chains of the Globe-PLDT duopoly in the said industry, particularly in the Internet to speed it up since it is one of the slowest in the world. But critics says that it might compromise the country's national security given the fact that the Philippines and China have territorial dispute in the Spratlys for decades, until now in spite of the warming of friendship as instituted by the Duterte administration's independent foreign policy. China has selected China Telecom to be its representative, in entering the country's telecommunications industry and in fact, in accordance with the 60-40 rule of the economic provisions of the present 1987 Constitution, it has chosen a Filipino partner for that purpose. In due time, perhaps, the Government will be able to address the national security concerns of this matter, even if the President ordered the speedy facilitation of China Telecom for a minimum of seven days.
On another point, Senator Bam Aquino pointed out days ago, that there are telecommunications company from South Korea that wants to invest in the country's telecommunications industry, but the problem is that they are getting difficulty in doing so. I think the Government, should ease the processing of the said companies from South Korea, provided they will get Filipino partners in accordance with the 60-40 rule of the Constitution so that they can also fully invest and compete in the telecommunications industry of the country. Not only South Korea, tap also the telecommunication companies of the US, Britain, France, Vietnam, Japan, etc., encourage them to invest also in the said industry of the country while finding too, Filipino partners that can help him. With many competitors, I am fully confident that the Globe-Smart duopoly will be broken enough. But before this happen, the President should first, ask the both Houses of Congress, to pass a law that will strengthen the spectrum management so that these foreign players will be able to fully penetrate the country's telecommunications industry. I hope the both Houses will cooperate as well.
If there are many competitors in the country's telecommunications industry, the Internet will in ful speed, the prepaid and postpaid charges, might be lowered, plus the texting services. My point here, is that we should not invite only China, but we invite other countries as well. The more, the merrier. If it happens also, it will create jobs as well to many Filipinos. It will also bolster the country's growing economy. It will help heighten up and accelerate the country's growth, and development.
