Time to Reform the Philippine Political Party System

For the past years, there are some bills filed both in the Senate and the House of Representatives that seeks to reform the political party system which for the past decades, have been weak and exposed to exploitation and selfish machinations by some people.

The bills calls for an end to switching political parties by most politicians for their personal convenience by penalizing it since it degrades party loyalty and discipline. It also provides for a state subsidy for political parties so that they could not anymore depend on others in financing their respective political campaigns, etc. But sadly, no administration dared to prioritize those bills to be enacted into law by the abovementioned Houses of Congress and no Senator or Representative dared to sponsor or co-author the bills as well as to push for their passages since most of them are members of the political dynasties and backed up by vested interests and who are turncoats in their political life, especially the trapos or traditional politicians who managed to stay in power due to dirty tricks and old style form of campaigning. All they want is to maintain the status quo so that they can play power amongst themselves all along! What the fuck!

On my part the reason why I support the bills to reform the political party system here in the Philippines is that it is a preliminary in strengthening our democratic institutions, to make our political parties mature to face enough the challenges of the 21st century and to usher in a new brand of politics here in the country. We cannot be always be skeptical of these bills if they are for the good of the country and of us, fellow Filipinos. We cannot be always complacent of what is happening in our country especially in the political party system. We must demand for changes on it!

One of the weakness of the Philippine political party system that I dislike is that every political party once becomes a ruling party would be filled out with new ones especially from a former ruling political party and being given perks, at the expense of the original members of the former. And of course, the original members would be dismayed and some may bolt out from the party. Sometimes, it may result into conflict and eventual division of political parties. This is so saddening. It is happening before and yet is it also happening up to date. Can you always be content with that my dear countrymen? No, we should not.

And the most painful of it is that most politicians are joining political parties especially those who became ruling political parties without believing the platform of government, core beliefs, party principles and ideologies of those parties. Ika nga sa Tagalog, sali lang ng sali para mapalakas ang poder! Naman! Hindi dapat ganon! It is not right all along.

You and I my dear countrymen, should hope that the current administration and the 17th Congress with firm political will should and must begin reforming the country's political party system now. If that happens, our political party system will be advanced and will be at par with successful countries in the world and our democracy will be upgraded.

That is why you and I my dear countrymen should beg our lawmakers to work on it and to forget their personal interests so that they can be good examples of setting forth good politics in our country.
