Philippine Industrialization
One of the reasons why the Philippines is being a laggard in terms of economic development in Southeast Asia, or perhaps in the entire Asia is because the country lacks an industrialization program.
Industrialization is a full-scale development of industries nationwide or in a region.
Many, many countries did it like South Korea, Japan, Singapore etc., that is why they are economically prosperous.
Here in the Philippines, we tried an industrialization program during the Quirino administration which was successful. During Martial Law, during the Marcos administration, we also tried an industrialization program but soon was tainted with corruption and due to objections by the oligarchs and international banking institutions, it died. The Ramos administration also tried it to no avail, I surmised.
Due to lack of an industrialization program, we are still an agricultural country. And because of this, many Filipinos are leaving the country to become OFWs hoping to achieve good life. What happened to the Iligan Steel Mill in Iligan City in Mindanao that was then controlled first by the Jacintos who made it great and was later expanded by the Government during the Marcos dictatorship? It was neglected as soon as it was privatized. It is now decayed. What a shame!
We need an industrialization program so that we can further propel our economy to greater heights. We need an industrialization program to create more jobs in this country. We need an indusrialization program to make our country self-sufficient and not to depend too much on help from other countries.
At this point, let me propose to the Duterte Administration the following tips in formulating and executing a successful industrialization program:
1.) Focus on the development of our export-oriented industries;
2.) Revive the Iligan Steel Mill plant and create other steel mill plants in the country
3.) The Government should take full control of both industries and oversee their growth;
4.) To build own cars, boats, ships, planes, etc.
5.) To focus on the development, expansion and growth of cement, petrochemical and photsphate fertilizer industries;
6.) The manufacturing of diesel engines and alcogas and finally;
8. The industrialization of coconut industry.
Such points must be facilitated by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Of course, local businesses and foreign players may chime in subject however, to regulations of the Government if they want to invest to level the playing field.
If this goals would be achieved by the present administration with greater critical collaboration with the legislature, private sector and society-in-general, then our country will be on the road towards becoming a newly-industrialized country and our economic progress would be enhanced, aside from the plan to generate more foreign investment.
